Top 4 things every woman needs in her closet

If you've been reading this blog at all, you'll know that I've been on a little journey called my #365outfit project.  It's a project where I seek to wear 365 different outfits over the course of a year or so.  Recently I passed the 100 day mark and so I thought it would be a good time to reflect back and go "hmm so why should anyone care?"

While hardly any of you may care about my narcissistic desire to document my style journey, many of you might care to benefit from some of the learnings I've gotten from it, one being how to know what an essential investment is and what isn't.   You know what I'm talking about; those pieces that you convince yourself is "an investment piece" that you'll wear forever and in a million ways, but which inevitably you end up just keeping in your closet for a proverbial rainy day situation.  Well, I'm going to tell you that investment pieces do exist - they just may not be the things you were thinking of.

By looking back at my own daily outfits, I've noticed that over the course of a winter and now spring, I can see how some pieces slowly phase out while others stick around.  I've narrowed it down to 4 things as follows:

Cardigans

Totally a no brainer.  The perfect layering item, a cardigan is a girl's second best friend (after diamonds of course).  You can throw these things onto anything and transform an outfit from blah, to casual chic, after work drinks, or weekend style.

Plain black is a must as a long-sleeved, black cardigan is one of the most versatile things you'll ever buy.  I've also found my boyfriend style grey cardigan to also be a staple as grey is always in and the boyfriend length suits my casual meets trendy look.

Black bandage skirts

The second essential you absolutely must have is an arsenal of black pencil skirts.  These babies go with everything and make everyone look good.  I love me a good black bandage skirt as they hug the curves, but also cinch in my fat, match with everything, and fit every occasion.  I especially love pairing black bandage skirts with any sort of top for going out - spend the money on 1 of these rather than a bunch of flimsy clubbing dresses you'll never wear when the sun's up.

Colored denim

One trend I hope has really long legs, is colored denim.  Instantly make any boring outfit pop by adding a splash of color!  I chose mine in a bright cobalt color that is blue, like regular denim, but oh so much more with its in-your-face brightness.

Accessorize

Finally, the last thing every woman needs in her closet is a healthy array of accessories.  If you know anything about factorials, then you'll know that you only need a small number of items to make a hell of a lot of combinations!  Take that theory to fashion and you've got a hell of a lot of ways to spice up any ensemble.
