Lusting for Fall - Shopbop x Just J Giveaway!

I usually try to write somewhat well for you guys on here, but right now I just want to go "Eeeeeeeee" like the little Hello Kitty loving girl I am -  I'm just that excited for this giveaway!  For whatever reason, the peeps at Shopbop have decided that my teeny blog is worth investing in and are offering to host a giveaway here for YOU to win $100 you can put towards your next Shopbop purchase.

Never heard of Shopbop? Seriously? Well, it's one of the most well known e-tailers out there, selling hot designer deals on clothes, shoes, bags and other accessories.  Shopbop has always been one of my favourite places to window shop from home, but sadly I never win giveaways like the one I'm offering you!

Here's what I would buy if I were totally unethical and claimed this giveaway for myself:

For realz, this sexy slip from Kiki de Montparnasse lingerie looks like an underthing you would actually want to wear out, it's so slinky and hot.

Or maybe I should go for something classier in time for holiday parties and NYE, like this pretty ostrich feather number from the Badgley Mischka collection?

Of course, I'd probably get more wear out of this edgy, yet work appropriate leather panel dress from Alex Kramer clothing...

Or this beautiful cognac Robinson tote from Tory Burch - check out the handy strap options and it's casually structured silhouette!

But then, these Sam Edelman Lisle booties are just the short ankle-length bootie I've been searching for.

Crap!! Now I'm really regretting that I can't enter my own giveaway. Don't make me regret being ethical readers, enter via 1+ of these entry options now!

Spend on Trend F/W 2012: Uniquely Vancouver

It was a sunny weekday afternoon when I ambled over to Main St. to check out this season's Spend on Trend.  A 3 day event showcasing the best in SoMa (South Main for non-Vancouverites) fashion, Spend on Trend is always full of fun, friendly people who just happen to be uberly creative to boot!

I've been to Spend on Trend several times now, so I can almost recognize many of the sellers, or at least their lines.  If you've been around the craft fair circuit in Vancouver, then you'll likely be familiar with some of these sellers.  Unlike others though, Spend on Trend has the best location as it's right on Main and just steps away from Main's delightful collection of coffee shops and generally good eats.  There will likely be one happening again in S/S 2013, so keep your eyes peeled out for the next event dates - it's the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Here are some of my perennial favourites:

Meiku Designs:

A favourite of mine ever since I got to interview Karen, the designer, Meiku is all handmade and inspired with West Coast flare. It's hippie gone modern style and a great addition to any wardrobe.

Adhesif

Known for their quirky remixing of vintage pieces, sometimes Adhesif can be hit or miss for me.  This season's collection of soft knits and girlish dresses has me swooning.  The dress above would look great with tights, oxfords and a wooly cardigan!

Carny Love

Be careful when visiting this lady's booth as the designer is a major saleswoman! I almost walked away with both these items before I begged leave to move on.  I can attest to the comfort of her cotton creations though and that floral sweatshirt number above still has me pondering...

Zula Jewelry

Lastly we have newcomer Zula.  Inspired by nature, Zula is full of delicate silver pieces all of which are handmade and feature real imprints of leaves. Super pretty!

#365outfit Challenge Week 36

Cardigan: Macy's | Scarf: Old Navy | Skirt: Urban Behaviour | Purse: Marc Jacob | Bracelet: vintage, Pandora

Top: Banana Republic | Pants: H&M | Heels: Aldo | Clutch, bracelets: vintage

Corset top, skirt: Aritzia | Chambray shirt, sandals: Forever 21 |Sunglasses: English Laundry | Bag: Marc by Marc Jacob

Dress: Forever 21 | Cardigan: Calvin Klein | Scarf: Tory Burch | Bag: Marc Jacob | Nude heels: Ana Luz

Boy, when I like things, I really wear the hell out of them.  Case in point: tons of repeats this week with my new vintage chain bracelets and the leather wrap bracelet I got as a freebie from KnowShow.  I love layering the arm candy, but it's hard to find non-bangle bracelets that fit my teeny wrists.  In order to make up for it, I've become habituated to walking with my hands spread like a duck's webbed feet.  So elegant.

Sorry for the utter lack of posts last week!  I started a new job and was busy seeing friends, family and going to fashion events! Yes, life is SO hard.  To make up for it, I've got lots of goodies in store for you readers including recaps on local trends and perhaps, even a special present for YOU.  Stay tuned later this week for the reveal!

#365outfit Challenge Week 35

Peplum dress: BB Dakota | Eel skin clutch c/o JALDA | Necklace: Guess | Heels: Anna Luz

Blouse: Old Navy | Skirt: Urban Behaviour

Hat: The Bay | Top: swapped | Shorts: Roxy | Nails: Inglot in Vernis a Ongles, Deborah Lippman Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?

Been taking it easy lately and trying not to shop (too much).  I'm late to the game, but I'm beginning to think of what I want to wear for Fall.  One thing for Fall I'm wanting more of is anything emerald green, burgundy and mustard.  Bought some green pants from H&M (only $15!) the other day, so that's one item off the list!

Last week, I was asked to comment on the challenges of doing this 365 challenge.  The easiest part for me has actually been thinking of the outfits!  It was definitely harder in winter to think of more creative outfits as I tended to live solely in sweater/jean/boots combos, but summer has been a breeze.  Summer clothing is definitely my comfort zone as I can wear shorts, skirts, and dresses along with pants.  The hardest part of the challenge has been taking the photos themselves.  I've had issues finding good photo locations with proper lighting and finding the time to snap outfits before I'm out the door is always a problem too.  Unlike other outfit blogs, I only snap outfits as I'm wearing them - no pre-planned shoots for me! It makes things more authentic I think, but also more logistically difficult.  Thank you to all those who have followed and encouraged my journey!  I plan to do a full-on recap when I finish the challenge - only 139 outfits to go!

Ditch: Almay Wake-up Eyeliner and Highlighter review

The Product
Awhile back I went to an Almay Fall preview where I got a sneak peek at all the lovely new products Almay had coming for us.  One of the products I was lucky enough to take home was this neat eyeliner + highlighter combo called the Wake-up Eyeliner + Highlighter set.

The Guts
Designed to perk up those sleepy eyes on the go, this sleek double-ended pencil features a dark eyeliner pencil on one end and a stubby highlighter pen on the other.

The set comes in 3 shade duos: Black jolt/Iced gold, Coffee buzz/Iced buff and Sapphire splash/Iced diamond.  I received the last shade.  Since I don't usually wear navy liner, I was quite looking forward to trying out this accent shade.

Price & Packaging
The packaging is very small and efficient, which I like.  You could easily fit this in a clutch for touch-ups. Both applicators don't require any sharpening either, which is also very convenient.  I wish a makeup company would develop flip top applicators, so that you don't need to hold, or put down the applicator's lid, but so far that's just a pipe dream.

Price-wise, this set is very affordable at $8.99 via Ulta.

Effectiveness
I've had great experiences with my Almay products so far, but this one I have to say, was quite terrible and I ended up throwing it out after a couple tries.  Firstly, the navy eyeliner broke right away; apparently, the pencil was actually hollow inside, making it very susceptible to any sort of pressure.  Secondly, when I tried to use the hollowed shard I was left with, I found the color pay-off to be very minimal.  I thought maybe this was due to the pencil breaking, so I took the piece that broke off and tried to swatch it, but with the same result.  Thirdly, the highlighter I didn't find to be flattering, or blendable.  The white highlighter was stark white and had this strange mix of sparkles in it resembling something I'd wear when I was 13.

In Almay's defense, maybe I chose the wrong shade duo and I got a defective product.  Certainly the reviews on Ulta are much more favourable.  I might be willing to try this product again, albeit with the Black jolt/Iced gold combo.

In 140 characters or less
Could be a defective product, but based on this try, I wouldn't recommend this at all.

Wow I hadn't realized this somehow till now, but I haven't posted up an outfit recap in awhile!  Summer weather is infinitely easier for me to dress in as the climate here allows one to still wear pants and even light sweaters comfortably alongside shorts and sandals.  Recently I was out of town for work, thus the more formal outfits and hotel bathroom shot.  I also went on an awesome outlet shopping trip with my favourite blogger girls and am showing off many of my new items in these outfits!

This summer has been really fun and I'm sad that it will be ending soon, but I'm also excited for a new chapter opening ahead as I'm happy to let everyone know that I have a new job to look forward to! So here's to happy endings and new beginnings!

Anna Dello Russo for H&M music video Fashion Shower: Hot or just wet?

Recently H&M released a new electro-pop music video featuring their latest collabo with Anna Dello Russo (watch it here).  In case you're not familiar, ADR is a HUGE fashion personality and former editrix at Vogue known for her utterly OTT street style.  The video, entitled Fashion Shower, features ADR seductively rapping her fashion rules while romping around in skin-tight spandex, thigh-highs and covered in the accessories she designed for the label.

Watching this video gave me very mixed feelings.  My fashion lover side was swooning at the excessively opulent and over-sexed vibe of the clip.  Fashion is, after all, about fantasy.  It's about grown women playing dress-up to let her feel however she wants in that moment: powerful, sweet, seductive, striking, or elegant.  Fashion can truly change how you feel about yourself (for good and bad) and is the one art form that is truly accessible to all. As an expression of this fantastical world, and ADR's personality itself, it all makes perfect sense.

It also makes one perfectly want to gag.  In this time of global recession where people can't even pay their bills, this pandering to fast fashion and the perpetuation of the "rich is best" fantasy is a bit condescending.  Can she really be that out of touch? Or does she see it as her life mission to provide inspiration through aspiration?  If so, that's not exactly a healthy attitude to encourage as so many of us go into credit debt buying a lifestyle we can't afford.  Let's be fair though, maybe I'm not giving ADR enough credit. What if it were all a subversive satire of excess in contempt of the economically stricken masses?  Wouldn't that be so clever - you might be not be rich like me dahling, but you can still wear fake gold!

Finally, this video has me shaking my head at ADR herself.  Is it appropriate for 50 year old Russo to be cavorting and purring like an overgrown Lolita?  In her defense though, if you were 50 and had that fit (or emaciated) a body, wouldn't you want to flaunt it?  Use it while you got it, one could fiercely argue and part of me certainly agrees with that sentiment.  However, I also think that one should age gracefully and if I wouldn't wear ass cheek leather skirts now, it seems really disturbing that Russo does.  Is this who we as young women should look to for inspiration as we age? Botox your forehead ladies and cover up those neck wrinkles with chains and chains of necklaces!  In my opinion, I think if I saw ADR in person she would just look like a ridiculously aging cat lady dressed in overpriced clothes, but put her in a glossy online collage and suddenly she is an icon.

Despite all this, the biggest hypocrisy probably comes from myself.  I love/hate the video and I'll probably still buy all that cheap shit just to satisfy my own material aspirations.  So really, does knowing that I am buying into it all worse than not knowing?  It's a dilemma that I as a fashion lover continually struggle with.  How does one love fashion without succumbing to its pretentious delusion?  I really don't know.

To conclude, someone from SNL REALLY REALLY needs to parody this video.  C'mon, shower? Tips like "Fashion is always uncomfortable" and dominatrix overtones?

Wait, maybe it doesn't even need parodying.

Buy: Deborah Lippman The Stripper To Go Polish Remover Finger Mitts review

The Products
If you're the type of person who HATES messy nails, then this is the product for you.  Rather than lug around cotton balls and a big ol' bottle of remover, Deborah Lippman now offers these sleek travel-sized mittens doused with polish remover.  Anal tendencies guaranteed to be relieved, yay!

The Guts
If you're familiar with paper face masks, then you'll easily see the inspiration behind this product.  Inside each packet is a single finger sized mitten soaked in remover.  Like all DL products, this contains no toluene, DBP, or added formaldehyde.

Price & Packaging
A box of 6 packets costs $12 on Nail Polish Canada, making this $2 per packet.  Not exactly good value.

Effectiveness
One mitt is said to be enough for 10 nails. I usually wait for my polish to wear for a couple weeks before I'm forced to remove it, just because I'm lazy.  Here are my nails wearing Inglot's Vernis a Onglots after 10 days:

I have to say that I'm quite impressed with this remover. It erased all traces of polish within just under a minute with minimal rubbing.  In another test I also tried this while wearing the Deborah Lippman Do Ya Think I'm Sexy glitter polish and found it much harder to remove; this is to be expected though as glitter usually is more difficult.

In 140 characters or less
Very effective for regular polish & love the slim packaging, but too expensive for everyday use.
