Guest Post: Kalyn's Favourite Red Lip Products

Kalyn Lord Top 5 Red Lip Products

I'm very happy today to present a guest post by Kalyn of KalynLord.com, beauty blogger extraordinaire and the driving force behind the Canadian Beauty Bloggers. If you haven't heard of Kalyn before, then get yourself over to her blog as she posts hilarious, informative and frank reviews on skincare and makeup and is especially known for her love of colorful lipsticks. Without further ado, Kalyn!

I love  good red lips -- they are a quick and convenient way to pull your look together with minimal product, taking you from bedhead and sloppy PJ pants to effortless boho chic with one simple swipe.  A good red can brighten your complexion, make your teeth look whiter, and your face more youthful -- for me, cooler-toned reds are most attractive, although a vibrant, warm red has its place in a properly balanced makeup look. The best thing about reds? There are amazing options available at all sorts of price points -- from a four dollar drugstore deal to a highly coveted indie line. Here are my Top Five favourite red lip products...in no particular order:

Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss in 107 and Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in #985 Infrared

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in #985 Infrared: I depot most of my lipsticks into these little containers, but rest assured that both of these shades come in your standard bullet format when purchased. Maybelline's Vivids are exactly as described -- extremely bright and bold. Infrared is definitely the warmest of my favourites, and it is also one of the most impressive. It outperforms many higher-end reds in my collection, offering an opaque finish in one swipe, with no feathering or bleeding. I've seen this on deeper skin tones and it really pops against a tan. Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss in 107: the darker of the two pots above; 107 is decidedly cool-toned, but not nearly as scary on the lips as it is in the tube/pot. It has a gorgeous, creamy finish that is not-quite matte, but very classic-looking. I love pairing this with a really bold brow -- it's a colour that requires very little accompaniment to truly shine.
  OCC Lip Tar in NSFW

OCC Lip Tar in NSFW: a straight-up, classic pin-up red -- the formula is amazing (the smallest dab will do) and the pigmentation is insane. This is definitely my go-to daytime red. There's enough coolness to keep my smile looking bright and white, but it is generally neutral enough to be worn by pretty much everyone, no matter the undertone of your skin.
Lime Crime Velveteen Liquid Lipstick in Wicked

Lime Crime Velveteen Liquid Lipstick in Wicked: Wicked is a beautiful, deep brick red, with cool undertones and a smooth, velvet-matte finish. Almost plummy, it looks beautiful layered over a dark pencil for depth, or layered under other red products for increased longevity and richness. It is quite dark on its own, but still very wearable. Wicked is a new(ish) offering from Lime Crime, but quickly outshone its sister, Red Velvet, thanks to the uniqueness of the shade.
Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Red Velvet

Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Red Velvet: there is no denying that I LOVE the Lip Butter formula -- it's soft and creamy, balmy with a decent amount of pigment. I like to think of these as the grown-up answer to lip balms -- I happen to own the entire range, and Red Velvet is definitely one of my favourites. It is an easy-wearing red; almost fool-proof thanks to the semi-sheer formula. The wear time is understandably less than the matte/liquid formulas in this list, but nothing beats this butter when it comes to applying on the fly.

As you can see, my choice reds span an impressive range from light to dark, matte to glossy, cool to warm. I've already shared some fabulous reasons for loving red lips, but my favourite one of all? You always have an excuse to buy more -- each red is unique in its own way and, of course, these five are only the tip of the iceberg.
