Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant review

Just J: Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant

I got this sample size of the Dermalogica Cream Exfoliant in one of the Sephora sample packs that they had on sale when they used to carry Dermalogia. It's so tragic that Sephora no longer carries Dermalogica - what's up with Sephora discontinuing all my favourite lines?! Hopefully though you can find one of these packs at places like Winners or at a Dermalogica boutique as they're a great way to try out multiple products from this fantastic brand.

The Product
The Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant is a chemical exfoliant designed to gently slough off dead skin cells, dirt and impurities while improving skin's texture. Like all Dermalogica products, it contains no artificial fragrances or colours.

Chemical exfoliants, for those unfamiliar, work just like physical (scrub) exfoliants, except that they use chemicals to do the work rather than scrubbing beads or granules. Chemical exfoliants work like masques and can be a gentler alternative for sensitive skin.

The Guts
The primary ingredients in this product are:

  • Diatomaceous Earth - a silicate material made up of the fossilized remains of diatoms, a hard-shelled algae. This material is used for a variety of purposes, but in skincare products, it's probably included for its exfoliating properties.
  • Butylene Glycol - helps provide a spreadable texture
  • Isodecyl Salicylate - aka salicylic acid, helps prevent blemishes and renews the skin
  • Apricot kernel oil - a skin conditioner to help plump up skin
Other interesting ingredients of notes are lactic acid (exfoliant), lavender oil (moisturizing, can cause irritation), lemon and orange oils (astringents).

Price & Packaging
For a full-size 75 mL bottle, it will cost you $52 via Dermalogica's website. The packaging is a straightforward squeeze tube.

To use, simply apply a thin layer over your face, avoiding the eye area, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then either rinse off or wipe away with a warm cloth. I've read some scathing reviews of this product due to the inclusion of Diatemaceous earth, but since you don't really use this like a scrub, I think the possibility of irritating your skin with this ingredient are low.

I found this scrub to be very gentle, yet effective on my skin. Having used physical exfoliants all my life, I really missed that scrubbed clean feeling. Instead, this one feels more like a mud masque as it dries down and leaves your skin feeling oh so slightly tight.

After a few regular weeks of twice weekly use, I found that my pores were tighter and my skin more even without any of the slight redness that scrubs can sometimes leave you.

Final Verdict
Buy - a bit pricey, but if you enjoy a thorough, relaxing cleanse than this is for you!
