Skincare, Simplified: Mereadesso One Step Skincare Review

Just J: Mereadesso One Step Skincare Review

For as long as I can remember, I have religiously followed the tenets of a proper skincare routine: cleanse, tone, moisturize. I have been using anti-aging products since I was 25 and have expanded my routine to include serums (face and eye) and facial oils. You can imagine then what a shock it was for me to try the Mereadesso One Step Skincare routine which asks you to strip your daily routine to just two products. TWO! As a beauty blogger, this would seriously put you out of business. However, founder Linda Stephenson can be quite convincing.

I met Linda last month at an intimate event in Vancouver where she introduced us to her products and the motivations behind them. An industry veteran, Linda worked as a cosmetics executive for huge cosmetics brands as a designer of new product formulations. As she saw how skincare lines were becoming increasingly fragmented and customers increasingly confused, she knew there had to be a simpler way; thus, the idea behind Mereadesso was born.

Mereadesso is built upon the idea of "one step, one product, for everyone." There are no products for different skin types or even between men and women. There's just one cleanser and one moisturizer and that's it.

Despite my initial skepticism, the results are very convincing. Checking out the before and afters online, I knew I had to go full board with this, so I decided to try out the All-in-one moisturizer and the Face+neck cleanser for 5 weeks to see if I too could transform my skin.

The before

Ugh, my #makeupfree selfie isn't very inspiring

My skin is already pretty even and clear, but I do have some open pores around my cheeks and nose, as well as dryness on my forehead and under eyes. Also, with the hot summer weather, my skin was getting oilier than normal.

The Products

Just J: Mereadesso One Step Skincare Review

  • Face+neck cleanser: an all-in-one solution that removes makeup, cleanses, exfoliates and also acts as a toner.
  • All-in-one moisturizer: acts as an eye cream, facial cream (for both day and night), serum and primer. This moisturizer contains 16 botanical extracts, 8 minerals and over 20 antioxidants!

The Guts
The Face+neck cleanser primarily contains:
  • Cyclopentasiloxane - gives the product a slippery feeling and provides a protecting barrier that keeps in moisture
  • Cyclohexasiloxane - another silicone based ingredient that works similarly to the previous one. There has been some evidence on non-human trials of harmful effects, so this ingredient is limited in use in Canada
  • Rose water - an emollient ingredient that helps lock in moisture
  • Aloe vera extract - a super ingredient that helps moisturize, protect and repair skin
The All-in-one moisturizer primarily contains:
  • Aloe vera extract
  • Witch hazel bark - a mild, natural toner that helps to restore skin's suppleness
  • Grape seed oil - a natural moisturizer
  • Polysorbate 20 - an emulsifier that helps bind all the product's ingredients together

Price & Packaging
Both products come in sleek, luxurious looking rectangular bottles with pump dispensers. The Face+neck cleanser costs $45/120 mL bottle, while the All-in-one moisturizer is $120/50 mL. Supposedly both of these products will last you for months, however I have used my moisturizer up in just 5 weeks.

While very slick looking, I found the packaging to also be impractical. The sharp edges of the bottles made it a bit difficult to hold in my small hands. The bottles are also opaque, so you have no idea how much product you've been using.

Effectiveness
For the first couple weeks, I found it really hard to drop my skincare routine to just two steps. Supposedly doing so would free me up with tons of time and money, but I was hardly rolling in either after 5 weeks.

Left: Face+neck cleanser | Right: All-in-one moisturizer

To use the cleanser effectively, I had to do a lot of trial and error. During the week, I normally wear a full face of makeup: foundation, powder, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, eyeshadow, brow pencil and blush. The recommended 1-2 pumps DOES NOT CUT IT. I used a total of 8 pumps to thoroughly cleanse my face: 2 pumps per cheek, 2 pumps for the forehead, 2 for the nose/chin and 2 for the eyes. You also have to really work this cleanser into your skin for at least a couple minutes. If you follow these steps, then it does work magically at dissolving your makeup without leaving your skin tight or dry. Like all milky cleansers though, it's a bitch to rinse off. Make sure you scrub your face vigorously afterwards with a WET washcloth.

Even after all this, I ended up having to go over my face with a cleansing toner as I still had some residue left over. I don't think this was due to the cleanser not being effective, but rather just that it is really difficult to wash it off.

The All-in-one moisturizer is also a great product. It's the perfect light moisturizer for summer; it leaves your skin feel soft and plump, but never tacky or heavy feeling. If you have sensitive skin, be forewarned that you may experience a slight tingling sensation, however this is said to be normal as it's due to the toning ingredients in this lotion. I really enjoyed using this as a face moisturizer, but I have to be honest - it didn't really work for me as an eye cream. After a couple weeks, the fine lines on my eyes were appearing sooner and deeper and I had to switch back to my regular eye cream.

In terms of time saving, due to the extra time required to use the cleanser, I doubt I saved any time there. However I did probably save a teeny bit of time from not having to switch between my moisturizer, eye cream, serum and two toners. I didn't really bother timing how long it took me to unscrew all those bottle caps, but let's say it saved me a total of 2 minutes.

The after
Once I'd gotten used to how to use the products, I really enjoyed the simplicity of the Mereadesso line and in no way could I fault the quality of the ingredients used. Both products' ingredient list are top-notch and having met Linda, I feel confident that every single one was included for a purpose.

After 5 weeks, my skin felt super soft, was brighter (don't let my horrible bathroom lighting fool you), even more even-toned than normal, and healthy looking. The only downside was that it didn't really help with my shininess at all and in fact, I think it made it a teeny bit worse. I also didn't notice any difference in the size of my pores.

Final verdict
Buy - the cleanser, not the moisturizer. While I found both products to be very effective and I actually liked the moisturizer more, the high price point and short use time have to make me say nay to this one.
