10 Fashion and beauty pet peeves

It's a Monday which means that we're all feeling a little out of sorts and a little cranky today. In the spirit of it being a Monday, I would like to rant a bit about some of the things that really irk me in regards to fashion and beauty.

In no particular order, my top 10 pet peeves when it comes to fashion and beauty are:

  1. The lack of a universal size system for clothes and shoes. The vast majority of the world uses metric for god's sake, so why can't stores agree on one system of sizing? It's ridiculous trying to shop for anyone or for yourself when you first have to familiarize yourself with what a size 4 is at store A versus at store B. And just stop with the vanity sizing already! I KNOW already that I'm not really a XXS, although I do thank for the attempted ego boost.
  2. Or at the very least, have cohesion within your own brand. Makeup brands are horrible for this with "light skin" meaning various things across different foundation lines within their own brand.
  3. Multiple names for the same ingredient. I'm looking at you mineral oil/petrolatum as a common example. Not only do we have to deal with all the misinformation floating around about whether an ingredient is safe or not, we also have to find out what all their shifting aliases are!
  4. Online stores that aren't updated or useful in any way. Yes, these still do exist. Not naming names, but I'm sure we've all encountered a store's website where it's not easy to find the stores near you, or they may not even sell anything online! What's the point?!
  5. Ridiculous sales. I'm looking straight at you Aritzia (why do I feel okay calling you out by name?). It's just INSULTING to have a sale where it's $5 off. I probably spent $5 just getting to your dumb store so give me my freaking 40% off dammit!!
  6. Products that have no instructions on how to use them. Yes, you're a pre-post-serum-essence thingy, but at what point of the day or night am I supposed to use them in my bazillion step beauty regime?
  7. Sweaters made of itchy material. We can get to the moon and peer into the secrets of the universe, but making a sweater out of material that won't make you feel like you're wearing thorns is apparently beyond the realm of science.
  8. Clothes that are dry clean only. Silk, being the exception, but why are so many nice tops dry clean only? Men have pants that they can wipe ketchup off of, so why can't we ladies get a cheaper laundry bill.
  9. People who wear Crocs and Uggs. This needs no explanation. The only exception is if it's snowing or you're gardening. Then you're legit, otherwise just quit.
  10. People who write lists telling you what's a do or a don't in fashion. Every "don't" at some point was probably a "do" so wear what makes you feel fabulous and forget the trends. Except if it involves #9. Don't do that. Ever.

By the way, it's the last week to enter my Clinique Sonic System Purifying cleansing brush! Get on it!

Pinspirations: cloudy mornings

Alexa Chung, WhoWhatWear | Crystal and rhinestone ring, AEBGG | Interior, MoonandTrees | Lea Seydoux, Grazia | Robes, Plum Pretty Sugar | Pencil skirt, WhoWhatWear | Shadow palette, Tom Ford, Demure Porcelain

You know those days. It's the weekend and the morning light is that kind of clear, off-white color and the sky is that perfect heather grey that you've been searching for in a sweater for ages. You stretch and luxuriate in the fact that you don't have anywhere to be. If you do, then you show up looking effortless with just a hint of a smoky eye, bee-stung lips and clothes that make you long to return to bed.

I haven't done a Pinspirations post lately, but I miss them. It's always so interesting to cull through my recent and past pins for a sense of cohesion to guide me in my day to day outfit choices. When I went shopping on the weekend, it really hit me that I'm nearing 30. The trendy, teenager stores just struck me as gauche. Or maybe I'm in a norm-core phase. Whatever it is, I sure as hell don't feel like trying too hard.

Giveaway: Get Fall Fresh with the new Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush

Just J Giveaway: Get Fall Fresh with the new Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush

It's your lucky day readers - today I'll be introducing AND giving away the brand-spanking new Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush! Touted as Clinique's answer to the famous Clarisonic, this brush is designed to give you that fresh-faced summer radiance all year long.

To produce this tool, Clinique worked with a crack team of Swiss engineers and dermatologists to develop this revolutionary new addition to their 3-step skin care program. Designed to work with their existing cleansing products, the Sonic will help remove makeup, clarify pores and slough away dry, dead skin.

So how does this brush differ from the Clarisonic and other cleansing brushes?
  • It's tolerable for even the most sensitive skin tones with its super soft bristles and massaging motions (I can vouch for the softness having touched one myself - it is BUNNY soft)
  • Two speed levels allow for personalization depending on how deep a clean you desire
  • The oval shaped brush and ergnomic handle make this brush easy to use and helps you to focus on all those nooks and crannies of your face
  • Two different types of bristles target different areas of your face - the green bristles are a little rougher to dig into the pores of your T-zone for deep cleaning while the white are softer for overall cleansing on your cheeks
Want to learn more? Watch the video below:

You can purchase the Sonic anywhere where Clinique is sold for $95, but right now I have a special opportunity for one lucky person: the chance to win their own Sonic brush!

This giveaway is open to Canada and the continental US - the only requirement is that I ask you to report back with your results upon using this brush for a follow-up post here on Just J! Don't worry, you don't need to be a blogger; you just need to provide your honest opinion.

So what are you waiting for? Enter below!

Introducing Amie Skincare: Morning Dew Matte Finish Moisturizer and Spring Clean Deep Cleansing Mask reviews

I'm very excited to bring to you another new-ish launch to the Canadian skincare market: Amie Skincare. You may have read some reviews of this line already, but if you haven't, Amie is a UK beauty line started by former Estee Lauder exec, Fiona Parkhouse. After seeing the irritating effects of products on her daughter's skin, Parkhouse teamed up with dermatologist Dr. Susan Mayou to design a line of plant-based products that are gentle, effective and non-irritating. Designed for sensitive skins, Amie skincare defines itself as "pure and natural" beauty, with all of their products being cruelty free, paraben-free and containing on average 95% natural ingredients!

Today I'll be showcasing two products from the line, which launched just last month exclusively at Shopper's Drug Mart: the Morning Dew Matte Finish Moisturizer and the Spring Clean Deep Cleansing Mask Click through for the full review...

August beauty favourites

Just J: August beauty favourites

August was all over the map for me. I spent August dancing, hiking, relaxing and living life. For that you need some products that can keep up with whatever life throws and these picks do just that.

1. YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush lips and cheeks in Rose Epicurien - this duo product truly rocks. Not many multi-purpose products actually do what they claim, but the YSL Baby Dolls really do. This color gives me a perfect pink flush on my lips and cheeks that lasts for hours and looks very kawaii. Now I want them all!

2. The Body Shop Wild Argan Oil Solid Oil - this thick solid oil lip balm is made from ethically sourced wild argan oil from Morocco. I like using this balm as an overnight lip treatment as it's very thick and moisturizing. This balm leaves my lips soft and repaired for the day ahead. View full review.

3. Almay Intense i-Color eyeshadow in Smoky-i for browns - every brown-eyed girl needs a good arsenal of purple shadows and this is a great affordable option from Almay. This palette contains 3 shades which can be applied gently for a soft daytime smoky eye and layered deeper for a dramatic evening eye. The purple in particular is very wearable as it's slightly shimmery with a gray-purple finish.

4. Matrix Biolage Scalp Sync Soothing Serum - a cooling treat for your dry, itchy scalp, I am truly addicted to this product! Menthol and peppermint cool, while vitamin B5 nourishes your roots. View full review.

Lancome Grandiose mascara review

By now you've seen and heard lots about the new Lancome Grandiose mascara, so I will try not to bore you with what you already know. What I can tell you about is my own personal experience with this product. The Grandiose was provided as a press sample care of Influenster.

The Product
The Lancome Grandiose mascara is hailed as a revolution in mascara primarily because of its innovative brush wand. Lancome claims this wand is swan-like, although I would beg to differ. This is what a real swan neck looks like:

Sorry to burst your bubble Lancome; your wand is bent, not swan-like. Regardless of that detail though, this wand is quite unique. The wand is bent just so that it becomes easier to reach every teeny lash on your eye and helps eliminate that awkward "cross-over" effect when you try to apply to your opposite eye from your dominant hand.

Formula-wise, Lancome also doesn't slack off. The Grandiose formula contains rose cell extract, which nourishes and smooths lashes for ultimate length and definition.

So did it live up to the hype? Read on to find out!

L'Occitane Control Styling Prep-Cream review

We pamper our skin to no end and pay attention to our health, but do we pay any mind to our hair? Like any other part of your body, hair needs TLC sometimes too and unlike the rest of your body, hair is subjected to a lot. You yank it, you bind it, you subject it to high heat, chemicals and all kinds of weather; it's no wonder hair can be such a mess! L'Occitane has the answer to your hair woes with its on-the-go solution to protect your hair against environmental, chemical and heat stressors.

The Product
The L'Occitane Control Styling Prep-Cream is a leave-in conditioner designed to repair damaged hair and protect it from future damage. The end result - sleek, shiny, soft hair.

This product is designed for dry, damaged hair types, but I've been using it on my fine tresses to no ill effect. Containing a mix of essential plant oils and no silicones, you can be sure that this product follows L'Occitane's philosophy of naturally derived, quality ingredients.

Vegas trip recap!

At the beginning of the month, my partners in crime, Sheila and Angela and I went on a quickie trip to Las Vegas. For the last couple years we've gone on a short summer trip and this year we decided to go somewhere more adventurous and this Vegas deal was just too cheap to pass up!

I've been to Vegas a few times before, but never in the summer and holy CRAP it is hot! Like 39 degrees, 29 degrees at night, hot. The air felt like an oven to the point where you wished there was no breeze because the breeze would just waft more heat and dust onto you. All of three of us being beauty bloggers, of course we had brought along a massive arsenal of moisturizers, masques and sunscreen, but my skin still felt parched by the end of our 3 night stay.

Like all trips to Vegas, it felt too long and too short. One can only live to excess for so long, but while you are, it's one fun ride! Click thru to read more...

Tangle Teezer review

Just J: Tangle Teezer review

When I first heard about the "revolutionary" Tangle Teezer hairbrush, I was very skeptical. How innovative could you really get with a hairbrush? They've basically looked the same for all time haven't they? Well, consider me wrong because as you'll read, the Tangle Teezer isn't what it may seem.

Happenings lately: Manning Park

I think I have to face it. September is here and I am not ready yet to say goodbye to summer. The weather is still deceivingly summer-like and although fall fashions are lurking at the edges of my vision and in my blog reader, I am resolutely in denial. I haven't had enough sunshine and flip-flops yet dammit!!

NYX Angel Veil Primer Review

Just J: NYX Angel Veil Primer review

The NYX Angel Veil Primer is described as a lightweight, silky primer that will set your makeup and leave you with flawless skin, but are the claims true?

Diner en Blanc 2014 Vancouver

A month or two ago, I received a special "secret" invite to a Vancouver tradition: Diner en Blanc. If you've never heard of it, Diner en Blanc is a worldwide trend where various cities host spontaneous fancy dinners where everyone dresses up all in white. It's very much like a rave/flashmob minus the dancing. Participants are sent the secret location of the dinner only a couple hours beforehand and everyone shows up at the designated spot in their outfits, with tables, chairs, cutlery and even food in hand. Although there are a crap ton of rules around the event (bright whites only, invite only, must bring everything yourself unless you pay for the catered dinner, etc), it's still seen as a fun way to meet new people, dress up and participate in an exclusive event.

Normally there is a waitlist of thousands (over 33k this year to be exact) to get in, so when I received my media invite, I was thrilled! I was also a little sheepish as I do think the event, with all its rules, is a bit douchey and a way for douchy people to rub their exclusive "coolness" in people's faces, but I guess I am more okay with it if I'm one of those people?? Argh.

Anyhoo, it was a beautiful Vancouver evening when I skipped out of work in my all white outfit and trained my way over to this:

On Vacation - Viva Las Vegas!

As you're reading this post, I will be curled up in my luxurious Vegas hotel bed, waking up to 37+ degree weather with my favourite girls, Sheila and Angela for a few days of sunshine, shopping and living it up, Vegas style!

See you all next week :)

Estee Lauder Fall/Winter 2014 Preview - *pic heavy*

A couple weeks ago I had the lovely pleasure to preview all the latest releases from renowned beauty line, Estee Lauder. As a newbie to the brand, I immediately fell in love with the luxurious packaging and quality ingredients of each product. I've always thought of Estee Lauder as an older brand, but after this event I think that the brand is either introducing products aimed for a younger demographic, or I'm just getting older!

Just to warn you, there are quite a few photos here as I went a little snap crazy! I simply couldn't help myself as everything was so pretty and elegant and the light so helpful. Anyhoo, let's get on with it!

Probably what Estee Lauder is most famous for are its high-end skincare products. The famous Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair ($62) is a powerful anti-aging serum that helps prevent and fight all signs of aging. I was super excited to see the new Micro Essence ($95), a product first introduced in Asia, which is a rejuvenating liquid essence that is patted onto skin after cleaning. The Micro Essence works similar to other Asian essences and helps to brighten, moisturize and provide suppleness to skin.

Another "eee" moment for me was to learn about the Nutritious line, a new line of skincare designed and tested exclusively on Asian skin. While I'm fairly sure most anyone could use these, when it says it's designed for Asians, I take that to mean the products are designed primarily for brightening, which is a large concern for Asians as we age. The Rosy Prism Radiant Gel Emulsion is a moisturizer designed to plump up and provide light hydration while the Radiant Essence again helps hydrate, plump and brighten sallow skin.

Next up, is the Enlighten line, which again targets hyperpigmentation. The new EE cream (that's EE for Enlighten Even - what a gimmick!) provides coverage, SPF 30 and light reflecting pigments to give you a natural inner glow. The EE cream is designed to work together with other products such as this Dark Spot Correcting Night serum.

Once you've got your skincare needs met, Estee Lauder also offers a wide range of makeup products. Above is the complete range of shades from their Perfectionist ($45) foundation containing SPF 25. This foundation provides medium coverage with a silky, matte finish.

And if you want to graduate up from using your fingers to apply makeup, then there is this beautiful Sculpting Foundation Brush ($45) for you to try. Although the shape is a tad lobster claw-esque, the unique shape is designed to envelop the curves of your cheekbones.

Check out that beautiful packaging!

Next, all during the month of October, you can purchase this exclusive pack of Estee Lauder products with proceeds going to support breast cancer. Consisting of a solid perfume, a powder compact, nail polish, serum and a cute makeup pouch, these products each contain special branding with the breast cancer ribbon.

Above are some of the new releases from sister line, Aerin. Targeting a younger demographic, this line includes two beautfiully fresh fragrances (my fave was Meadow), a sheer lip tint, and rosy lip glosses and shadow palettes. As well, these brown eyeliners get  a big thumbs-up from me; I've been using mine since the event and love its richly pigmented color and silky texture.

Lastly, my favourite part of the event was checking out all the new shadow palettes. There were tons of palettes to choose from (click through the above slideshow to see them all) and each was displayed with an accompanying photo of the visual inspiration behind that palette. Sadly for the bright shadow lovers, most of these palettes leaned more towards the neutrals zone, but there were some absolutely lovely purples and greens included in this collection as well.

Thank you to Estee Lauder and to Overcat Communications for the invite this fab event! You may purchase Estee Lauder products at The Bay and Holt Renfrew. Also, be sure to try out their complimentary touch-up service at Estee Lauder counters - I had the chance to try out this free service where one of their knowledgeable consultants freshens up your makeup and provides free advice and it is such an enjoyable way to spend your 15 minutes coffee break.

Will you be running out to purchase the new Estee Lauder picks?
