Stila Stay All Day Foundation Review | Could I have found my HG foundation?

stila stay all day foundation review

Out of all the products to review, foundations are one of my favourite. The analytical person inside me just loves how foundations are so scientific and require so much testing and personalization that it just gets my blogger mojo going. Plus, finding the right foundation is a quest that anyone can relate to and when you do, wow, it really gets your day going right.

My most recent foundation trial was with the Stila Stay All Day Foundation. This full coverage, matte foundation has been around for awhile, but was recently repackaged into a sleek brushed gold cylindrical container.

Designed to give flawless full coverage that feels lightweight and lasts all day, this foundation is also oil-free and contains botanical extracts to improve skin as it conceals. The Stila Stay All Day Foundation also promises to eliminate pores, fine lines and hyper-pigmentation  while providing a smooth, matte finish. Basically this is perfection in a bottle, plus it's available in 16 shades!

The Guts
The primary ingredients in this foundation are:
  • Water
  • Cyclopentasiloxane - a silicone designed to give products a lightweight feel with a smoothing finish
  • Butylene glycol - a lightweight ingredient that gives products slipperiness
  • Octyldodecyl neopentanoate - an emollient
  • PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone and dimethicone - silicone and a silicone thickener. Similar purpose as cyclopentasiloxane
Other interesting ingredients include panax ginseng root extract (antioxidant), gingko biloba leaf extract (moisturizing), anthemis nobilis flower extract (antioxidant, soothes irritation), green tea leaf extract (antioxidant), gynostemma pentaphyllum extract (antioxidant), vitamin E (anti-aging) and hyaluronic acid (moisturizing).

I was very impressed by the fact that these botanical extracts were right after the main ingredients, whereas in most items they're only added in minuscule amounts.

Price & Packaging
A standard 30 ml bottle will cost you around $40-50 wherever Stila is sold, such as at Sephora, Murale or Shoppers Drug Mart. While the original packaging featured a clear plastic bottle that kinda reminded me of MUFE, the new packaging is a brass-gold with a unique flat top pump dispenser that I've only ever seen with toners. The idea here is that you can control how much foundation comes out and whatever leftover you have, you can conceal inside with the cap, to be used up later. It's pretty ingenious and the pump is easy to use and control. 1 full pump is enough to last me several applications, so you can be sure this foundation will last you a long time.

As well, the bottle has a handy window on its side that lets you peek at the shade and see how much you have remaining, which I love! If only serum bottles came like this!

Coverage & Wear
Okay I'm just going to say it. I LOVE THIS FOUNDATION. The only other full coverage foundation I've tried before is my beloved Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer and I think the Stila Stay All Day Foundation has swooped in like Cersei and just blew Clinique off its throne. Now, this is not to say that I no longer love my Clinique, but this foundation has just really captured my attention and is all I want to wear these days.

I am wearing the shade Light, which is the 3rd lightest shade in the line (I'm about a NC25 right now for reference) and it's a perfect match for me, being just slightly lighter than my regular skin which has a bit of a tan.

To apply, I always use my Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. This foundation works just as well with a brush, but I just really love the muted glow that this foundation combined with this sponge gives me.

The Stila Stay All Day Foundation is everything I want in a foundation. It's easily blended and smoothed across the skin, melting into it and just smoothing over any bumps or fine lines. It also does a great job at concealing hyper-pigmentation, blemishes, and canceling redness. It even does a decent job at giving me some glow as it's more of a satin, rather than matte finish. I even like to use it as my under-eye concealer as it cancels out my dark circles, although to be fair my dark circles are fairly minor and can usually be concealed with a nude toned concealer unless I'm super tired.

One layer of the Stila Stay All Day Foundation will get you to medium coverage, where any unevenness is eliminated, but my hyper-pigmentation still peeks through. This is where I'll usually stop and then I'll dab on extra layers just where I need it. Another two layers applied with my sponge and all hyper-pigmentation is gone - and this effect lasts literally all day with no oxidation, melting or pooling.

Finally, I love that no matter how much I build up this foundation, I don't feel like I'm wearing anything at all. I also had zero breakouts from this foundation, unlike when I first started using the Clinique Beyond Perfecting, which did make me breakout from being applied too heavily.

Final Verdict
Buy - I cannot rave enough about this foundation. I have zero complaints - the price is pretty standard, but this formula is so amazing that I'd probably pay more for it. I will definitely be repurchasing this one!

PS. Happy Independence Day to my American readers!
