Lipsticks For Feeling Good: My Lipstick Collection Part 2

plum lipstick collection

In this multi-part series, I'm sharing a peek into my "active" lipstick collection. Right now I have 2 pencil cases (like the kind you use in elementary school to hold pencils and school supplies) full of lipsticks and these make up my go-to daily rotation. This series will feature those products and hopefully will inspire you to try a new lippie yourself!

Last week, I kicked off the first installment of my lipstick collection series, starting with reds, or the lipsticks I wear when I want to feel confident and bold.  This week, I'll be sharing the lipsticks that I wear just for me.

So often the debate online is whether women wear lipsticks for themselves, or to gain validation from others. I think it's naive to think it's purely one or the other. Sometimes I want to look good for my hubby, or to look good to make others notice me, and sometimes I wear things just to impress and gain favour from other women; but for the most part, I truly think that my makeup is for me and to make me feel a certain way.

This week, I want to share the lipsticks that I wear just for me because they make me feel good. When it comes to lipsticks, it's the magentas, the purples and the berry tones that give me tingles of joy, more so than other shades of lipsticks. Although I will always swoon over a luscious red, or the perfect MLBB (of which I have a bazillion), my magenta family of lipsticks will always hold a special corner of my heart.

Since I'm just showing my active rotation of lipsticks in this series, you won't see anything too wacky or avant garde, as the focus is to showcase the ones I really do wear.

My preferences for magentas range from anywhere between downright moody to fun and spunky, as well as from super sheer to one-swipe bold. Unlike reds, which can be intimidating, I feel that these kinds of berry tones are easier for anyone to jump into. You can choose one that has more pink in it to feel more subtle, or you can go as emo as your heart desires with a full, vamp plum.

Without further ado, here's a roundup of my go-to magenta and berry lipsticks!

  • Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick (review) - despite its super dark tube color, this one is actually the most wearable of the bunch as it's really sheer and wears more like a glossy stain. Black Honey was super popular in the 90's and it's having another moment now. It gives me that perfect wine-stained look that goes really well with fall and winter makeup looks, cozy knits and come-hither eyes.
  • Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Soft Plum (review) - another dark, but very wearable option from Clarins. Nothing says sophisticated like Clarins makeup and I loooove the Joli Rouge lipsticks as they're super creamy and have great color payoff. Soft Plum is a deep plum with red undertones.
  • Bite Beauty Luminous Creme lipstick in Mulberry (review) - the Luminous Cremes are discontinued now, but I believe all the shades are available in the Amuse Bouche formula, which is very similar. Mulberry is like a delicious glass of Merlot to me and it wears like such on the lips. It's full impact, mostly matte and so delightful!
  • Essence Longlasting Lipliner in Berry On My Mind (worn here) - every so often, I come across a diamond in the rough and this lip liner is one of those! A lot of lip liners are very drying and not useful to wear as a lipstick, but this shade can be worn both as a liner or on its own. Berry On My Mind is a fun, raisin color that's quite creamy, yet long lasting.
  • Annabelle TwistUp in Royale (review) - another beautiful magenta, Royale was love at first sight for me. From the original release of the TwistUp formula, Royale is creamy with a slightly glossy finish that looks surprisingly natural on my medium tone skin.
  • Annabelle TwistUp in Plump It Up (review) - this series is reminding me of how good these Annabelle lipsticks are! Plump It Up is a vibrant hot magenta that has equal parts pink and purple in it. This color makes me feel so flirty and playful and it looks awesome just on its own when paired with mascara.
  • Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet in Brilliant Violet (review) - I only started using this one recently and am already deeply, madly in love. If you love a matte look, but hate the fussiness of liquid lipsticks like I do, then you need to try these. It has a beautiful whipped mousse texture that just glides across my lips. On me, this shade is a gorgeous amaranth, which I think is my new favourite color word to say!
  • Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Berry Allure (review) - I've worn this gloss a ton on the blog and I'm not apologetic about it at all. I don't like a lot of glosses as they're just sheer, sticky messy things, but Berry Allure is so moisturizing and has a lovely jelly texture that's not sticky at all. It's pigmented enough that it could be worn on its own, or a great topper over any of these other lipsticks to amp up their shine and purple tones.
  • Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Orchid (worn recently here) - last, but not least, is another Revlon favourite. The Ultra HD lipstick formula is really underrated. It contains a unique gel center that gives these lipsticks extra color impact and a texture that's not waxy or creamy, but utterly unique. Orchid is one of my more purple leaning colors and in the tube it resembles a thistle purple, but on my lips the redness comes out a bit more so it ends up being more magenta than anything.
