Dr. Roebuck Boost & Tighten Serum Review | Get smoother skin in seconds!

dr roebuck boost and tighten serum review

I love trying out serums as unlike many other products, you can usually tell a difference with your skin right away! If you've never tried a serum before, then I highly recommend getting into them. They're a super-concentrated version of a moisturizer that's targeted to penetrate deeper than a moisturizer and provide long-lasting benefits.

Lately I've been using mainly oil-based serums, but my new favourite right now is this gel-based one from Dr. Roebuck. This Aussie brand is known for their capsule collection of pure, effective skincare that is eco-friendly and inspired by the best ingredients in nature. I haven't tried too many products from the range, but I was very impressed by the instant results I achieved after using this serum just a couple of times.

In love with this ingredients list
With serums, the #1 thing I always check first is the ingredients. Firstly, the Boost & Tighten serum is mostly made up of water and propanediol, a solvent that hydrates skin, but more importantly lets active ingredients absorb deeper into the skin.

Next, the Boost & Tighten serum contains one of my most favourite actives, niacinamide. This wonder ingredient is an antioxidant, so it fights signs of aging, while also smoothing and brightening the skin! My skin loves niacinamide, so I was really happy to see it so high on the list here.

After that, this serum contains some anti-inflammatories to fight redness (aloe vera), more moisturizers (coco caprylate, hyaluronic acid, rosa canina fruit extract, panax ginseng root extract, borago officinalis seed oil, squalane, and sunflower seed oil to name a few) and more antioxidant/anti-aging ingredients (retinol).

I love that this serum is crammed full of natural extracts and also proven antioxidants like niacinamide and retinol and not useless silicones or preservatives. When it comes to skincare, I'm okay with paying more than normal if the ingredients and results are good!

The packaging is a no-no
Like most serums, the Boost & Tighten serum comes in a glass bottle with a medicine dropper dispenser. I love the apothecary packaging trend as much as the next skincare lover, but GAWD it's becoming so overdone. This serum sorely needs a pump or squeeze tube dispenser. The texture of the Boost & Tighten serum is quite viscous and, for lack of a better word, gloopy, so a drop dispenser is probably the least efficient way to use this product. Dr. Roebuck isn't the only brand guilty of this type of packaging faux pas, but I really really wish that they had chosen a different direction.

Since the serum is so thick, it clings all over the dropper and doesn't actually get drawn into the dropper very well, so what I usually do is just wipe serum from off the sides of the dropper to use on my skin.

That smoothing effect tho...
The Boost & Tighten serum is meant to be used at night and I would definitely recommend wearing a SPF in the daytime while using this product as both niacinamide and retinol can make the skin more sensitive to sun damage.

I use about a dime sized amount on my neck and a similar amount for all over my face. As I mentioned before, the Boost & Tighten serum is quite sticky and viscous, but it still manages to spread easily across the skin and absorbs quickly, leaving behind a very light, but tacky, residue.

What really impressed me and made me want to use this serum everyday, was that it literally does have this subtle tightening effect on the skin, similar to that not-so-good tightening feeling you can get if you use a cleanser that's too drying, but in this case, it's a good thing! Within minutes of applying the Boost & Tighten serum, my skin felt noticeably smoother, as if I'd just had a facial and this was before I even applied moisturizer!

After using this serum every other night for the past few weeks, my skin seems smoother, more even and refined. As always, I haven't noticed any change in my hyper-pigmentation yet, but I'm hopeful that with longer use, maybe that will change.

The oddest thing about the Boost & Tighten serum is its fragrance, but I mean this in a good way. The serum has a very strong, eucalyptus scent to it, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't contain any. If you love that type of Vick's Vapor Rub scent, which I do, then you won't mind it, but if not, it takes some getting used to.

Final thoughts
Overall, the Dr. Roebuck Boost & Tighten serum has quickly found its way into my skincare staples. With top-notch ingredients and visible results, I can definitely see myself repurchasing this, even though it is quite a bit pricier than a lot of other serums.

Dr. Roebuck's also offers other serums that are targeted more towards preventing and reducing signs of aging, so if you're interested in trying this Aussie brand out, then you can check it out at your local Shoppers Beauty Boutique!
